As we celebrate Black History in the US this month, we wish to highlight the contribution of one our Garifuna patients. The Garifuna people, descendants of African-Carib populations who were exiled to the Honduran coast in the 18th century, live with discrimination, poverty, and higher rates of HIV than most other Honduran groups. Approximately 5% of our patients are Garifuna.
“Osman” is 59 years old and was a construction worker until 8 years ago when he lost sight in one eye. Due to age and disability, he is unable to find paid work. At Siempre Unidos’ clinic, he shares his carpentry skills to help maintain the grounds as well as care for the tilapia fish as seen in the photo below.
Siempre Unidos values the dignity and humanity of every person. We are grateful to people like Osman who help maintain our clinic and its operations.
